The Hamer Maestro Alex Gregory Seven String. There are only four of these seven (7) string guitars that Hamer made expressly for Maestro Alex Gregory back in the very early '90's, making these rather rare Artist Custom Hamers indeed. This particular instrument is likely the first of those guitars made by Hamer for Alex while Jol Dantzig was still onboard at Hamer in Chicago. It is certainly a most amazing piece of workmanship and Hamer is to be commended for their talented crafts people.

This Hamer Maestro Alex Gregory Seven String Guitar is Serial Number 027026. With a weight of 8.8 pounds (with Tremolo Bar installed) this is a very solid instrument with a neck that looks and feels more like the runway of an aircraft carrier. Total length is 39.7" from top of headstock to center of the bottom base of the body. Scale length is 25.5" with a 24 fret, 4 bolt neck set firmly into a snug body pocket and nice large impeccably finished frets. Fingerboard is dark, rich rosewood with dot markers and a nut width of 1 7/8" to accomodate the 7 strings. Neck width at the 24th fret is just shy of 2 3/4" which is the same as the strings width at the bridge.

Electronically, the guitar body is equipped with 3 narrow style split coil humbucking pick-ups, each routed through one of 3 triple throw (3 position) toggle switches that allow for = Off - On/Single - On/Hum for each pickup so that all PUs can be off or on in any combination of single or humbucking modes. This allows for a most dazzling array of pickup combinations and sounds. There is also a Lead Switch toggle that shunts direct to the bridge PU for instant access to screaming lead tones without altering previous switch settings. A rather nice touch for the performing artist.

A single volume and tone control then sends the audio signal to the Fender style body top mounted output jack. The Fender style tremolo bridge fulcrums on four screws and has seperate adjustable bridge pieces in order to fine tune the string height and intonation. Strings are inserted into the tremolo bridge through the back of the guitar body, Fender style.

The Hamer Maestro Alex Gregory Seven String is right at home playing esoteric rock arpeggios, fusion or even classic jazz (low B string!), blistering country (perhaps a stretch), intense studio tracking for film or record cuts, or just plain noisy fun in the rec room during rehearsals. Even with it's sturdy size and weight, this is a very balanced and musical sounding and playing instrument.
